The Freelancer's guide to beating the clock: Working smart, not long

PS: Always think for yourself. ᐧ ◡ ᐧ

As a freelancer, it's tempting to transform every waking hour into billable time. But here's my confession: I'm notoriously bad at taking breaks, not because I'm a workaholic, but because I genuinely love what I do. It's a blessing and a curse - a blessing because passion fuels my work, and a curse because, well, who needs sleep anyway?

Thank you for reading Freelancer Etc. This post is public so feel free to share it.

The Joy of Not Watching the Clock

Here's the game-changer for me: I don't charge by the hour. That's right, you won't find me clock-watching. My mantra? Charge for value, not time. This approach has been a lifesaver, allowing me to work flexibly without the pressure of a ticking clock. For more on this, check out my thoughts on charging for value here.

Setting Boundaries: The Freelancer's Superpower

Remember, as a freelancer, I'm my own boss. This means setting boundaries with clients is crucial. It's about communicating clearly from the start – my time is mine, and while I'm dedicated to delivering exceptional work, I also value my life outside of it. And guess what? Clients respect that. Setting boundaries isn’t just good for me; it's good for business.

Living Life, Not Just Working It

So, what do I do when I'm not glued to my laptop? I rest, cook, spend quality time with friends and family, and level up my skills. Choosing to freelance was about embracing a lifestyle, not just a career. It's about living life fully, not being chained to a desk.

Mastering Project Management

Let's talk nuts and bolts. A solid project management system is key. I use Coda, but Asana, Trello, and Notion are great too. My focus is threefold: tasks due this week, urgency of projects, and scheduling next client check-ins. This system keeps me on track without feeling overwhelmed.

The Art of Balancing

In conclusion, embracing the freelance life isn't just about escaping the 9-to-5 grind. It's about creating a work-life harmony that fosters both productivity and personal well-being. By charging per project, setting clear boundaries, and using efficient project management, I've found a rhythm that works for me. And perhaps more importantly, I've found the freedom to enjoy both my work and my life to the fullest.

Stay creative, stay balanced, and remember: in the world of freelancing, you're not just the boss of your work, but the architect of your life.
